Teaching Belief Matrix
The below artifact illuminates my core beliefs about teaching. It gives an overview of nine areas that I feel are important elements of a successful classroom. It identifies what I feel are key components of these different areas that a teacher must continually work to develop in order to be a great teacher. The areas included are classroom management, community, role of teacher, content, differentiation, assessment, high expectations, application of knowledge, and professional development.
My belief matrix reflects a very student-centered philosophy of education that I have about teaching. I believe that there are many avenues through which a student can learn and it is up to the teacher to find the ones that work best for individual students and each class they come to teach as a whole. It also reflects an expectation of having a group of diverse learners and individuals in the classroom and the fact that while it is important to plan ahead for this as much as possible, there should be room for adjustments to be a made to a teacher's approach and plans as he or she gets to know her students over the course of the year.
This article is important to my development as a teacher because I believe that it is necessary for a teacher to have a clear vision and goals for the kind of classroom they wish to create in order for students to be successful. This vision and these goals guide a teacher's planning and allow a teacher to have a "starting point" from which they can develop their classroom. It is also important for a teacher to have a justification for the decisions he or she makes in regards to planning, instruction, classroom set-up, and more. I believe that by identifying my core believes about teaching and the most important elements a teacher should focus on as they continue to grow as a teacher provides solid roots for a successful classroom.
