Education 344 "Uncookbooking a Lesson" Plan
This artifact is a lesson plan I wrote
for an assignment for Education 344 where we were asked to
"uncookbook" a lesson. This essentially means that we were
asked to take a science lesson and rework it so that it is less
activity-based and more rooted in the structure of the 5E model of
science instruction. I choose to write a science lesson based on
basic principles relating the structure and property of matter in
relation to the purpose of soap and detergent and how these cleaning
agents work.
I choose to include this artifact under the competency of "Content Mastery" because it is a demonstration of how I was able to take a previously written lesson and rework different aspects of it to make learning more meaningful for students to whom I would teach it. The 5E model of science instruction is an inquiry-based model and corresponds with my belief of providing inquiry-based learning opportunities to students as laid out in my "Science as Inquiry Teaching Platform", also included under this competency. I think that for a teacher to take an activity-based lesson and transform it to make it more meaningful for students, that teacher needs to be competent in understanding practices that help students best learn science at the elementary level. I believe that through this artifact I am able to demonstrate myself competent in this area through the incorporation of the 5e model within my lesson plan and my science as inquiry based approach.
