Goodbye Book from Students
This artifact is a collection of pages from a goodbye book my students made for me. upon completion of my student teaching. These pages each include a drawing my students made of use doing
something together and a sentence describing what we are doing together in the drawing. This book is very special to me because it really demonstrates the close relationships I formed with my students during my time student teaching. Some of the pictures even depict a real activity that I did with that student during my time as their student teacher, and it is very meaningful to me that they remember these times we spent together.
I believe that this artifact demonstrates my competency in the area '"knowledge of student" because it indicates the close bond I was able to form with individual students and my Kindergarten class as a whole during my time student teaching. Connecting with students and building a relationship based on mutual respect is something I believe to be critical in order for students to have the motivation to work hard and succeed in a school setting. In each of my students I found great potential and getting to know my students has helped me to have the ability to tap into this potential and help my students grow.
This artifact is also important to my competency in the area "knowledge of student" because the pages of this book explicitly show me some significant ways that my students have grown this Fall. Working closely with students in small groups from when they started "Kid Writing" at the beginning of October to know I am able to see significant gains in their letter formation, spelling, ability to sound out words, and punctuation. It is exciting to know that I had a part in helping them on their journey to becoming great writers, from teaching them how to write the majority of their upper and lowercase letters to have the opportunity to work with them one on one sounding out words and creating creative stories. I loved having the opportunity to work with my students individually and see their enthusiasm for writing firsthand.
The realization that they can take the abundance of creative thoughts, stories, and ideas that they are constantly sharing with me and transform them into a piece of work that is all their own is something amazing to watch develop in students.
