Video Clip of Teaching Shared Reading
I choose to include this artifact under the compentency "Instruction" because it is a clip of me teaching part of a lesson to my Kindergarten class during Shared Reading. It is a visual example of me engaging in the process of teaching students. This video clip was filmed during my time student teacher. In this video clip I am reviewing with my students their high-frequency (sight) words in addition to helping them learn their new high-frequency word "come". It also shows me reviewing alphabet letters and sounds with students and reading the story "Down on the Farm" and asking comprehension questions to develop my students' understanding of different elements of a story, what is going on in the story, and to develop good reading skills and techiques that they can use when they read independently.

I included this artifact under the competency "Instruction" because I believe that it exemplifies my ability to engage students in a lesson and manage a class as I teach and present to them the material. At the same time, in viewing this video and other videos of myself teaching, I am continually reminded of the importance of the practice of self-reflection as a teacher. Continually re-evaluating the way one instructs students, taking a look at what worked and what can be improved, is an important component of this. This is another reason for why I have included this video clip under the competency of "Instruction". As I viewed this clip of me instructing my students in shared reading I discovered a few aspects of my teaching that could be improved upon. For one, durig this lesson one of my students was having a difficult time paying attention. I think that I should have taken less time out of the lesson to focus on this/ used a strategy that would have taken less time away from the lesson to address this issue. Also, something that I realized as I was being filmed was how I become nervous when I know other peers and adults are going to be watching and/or evaluating a lesson that I have taught. Evaluation by peers and collegues can be extremely informative and beneficial, however, and it is something I will inevitably have to accept as part of being a teacher and being held to certain standards by the school and state in which I am working. Coming to realize that evaluations are aimed at and can help me to improve as a teacher helps me to view these in a more positive light and make me less nervous about them.
